As a nonprofit, your donation plays a crucial part in our ability to continue offering services. Without you, we can’t teach adults how to read, give books to children, or further the education of our students.
Studies have shown that 1 out of 8 adults in Lubbock County is functionally illiterate. That’s not a state statistic, or even a national one, but a number that impacts our town. 1 out of 8 of our neighbors, our friends, our coworkers, or our family members struggle with reading. And this, in turn, impacts their lives, and the lives of everyone around them:
43% of adults with the lowest literacy levels live in poverty.
75% of state prison inmates did not complete high school.
$232 billion is spent in excess in health care costs linked to low literacy.
$225 billion is spent each year in non-productivity in the workforce, crime, and loss of tax revenue due to unemployment.
Luckily, Lubbock, Texas is one of the most generous and neighborly cities in the United States. We take care of our own, and more importantly, show up in their time of need. Your fellow Lubbock neighbors need your help to receive the most important gift of their lifetime: the ability to read. Reading is a gift, one that was shared with us by our parents and our teachers. Now it’s time to pay it forward and give the gift of reading to those still waiting to receive it.
