Did you know that nearly 13% of your neighbors in Lubbock County are illiterate? That’s 1 in every 8 people in our backyard who can’t read.
Which stinks. Reading is hugely important these days. You read text messages, emails, internet articles, doctor forms, restaurant menus, movie descriptions on Netflix, crochet patterns–the list goes on and on. And for a large chunk of our community, they’re cut off from this basic skill.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. People with low literacy skills tend to have other problems to, which can include:
- low income
- increased risk of poverty
- limited career paths
- poor health
- higher hospital admission rates
- lack of understanding medical advice
- welfare dependency
- low self-esteem
- lack of privacy
And those are just a few examples. Low literacy levels impact nearly every socio-economic issue, from incarceration rates to taxes. At Literacy Lubbock, we firmly believe that a person’s low literacy severely jeopardizes their future, and that of their children too. Education is the foundation upon which a person builds success in their life. And without the ability to read, that’s threatened.
But you can change that.
